When the company closed business as Watkins-Johnson and paid off the stock
holders; what was left was a Division part of the Solid State Group that
formed a company called W-J Communications. Watkins was a major investor in
that company.
The rest of the different Divisions had already been sold to other
companies. The Gaithersburg, Md CEI Division known for their HF and higher
Freq.'s has changed companies several times since. BAE, etc.
It is unfortunate that the upper management thought the future was in
Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment which sucked a lot of money and
Defense Electronics was not the placed to be.
W-J at one time was a Top Down company making all the products going into a
receiver. Amplifiers, mixers, oscillators, etc.
Engineering staff was the best students from top rated schools: MIT,
Cornell, U of I, Stanford, Berkeley.
I am proud to have been with W-J for 27 years before my group was sold.
Great company until 1990.
