Howdy, Gang!
It seems like no matter what I get into, I always wind up with the
oddball joker situations that nobody else has to deal with. This
RA-6778C is no exception.
The receiver is EXCELLENT... but rack cabinets are a problem (a
VERY deep chassis), and if you find one it invariably is painted a
color that looks TERRIBLE with the receiver in it.
The RA-6778C front panel is painted a very odd color... kind of
a blue/green pastel. According to gary Wingerd, that's the color
the buyer (Royal Canadian Air Force) specified, so Racal provided.
Ever since I got hold of the rig I've been searching for spray
paint to use on a matching speaker panel. I haven't been able to
find any; I even tried resorting to automotive spray paint colors,
but nothing comes close to matching. I considered custom made,
computer matched paint, but that's not an attractive proposition;
the maker I spoke to wants $35 a can for the stuff, and for
everything I have in mind here I'd need 3 or 4 cans.
I think I may have found the solution to the problem.
Believe it or not, there are two paint companies that specialize
in spray paint for use in GRAFFITI; they claim it's for so-called
"Wall Art". They make an amazing assortment of colors for it; both
have over 150 different shades in thier catalogs. Checking out
thier color charts I've found what looks like an exact match for
the Racal panel.
If you find yourself stuck for the proper paint color, do a web
search for paint by BELTON-MOLOTOW (imported from Germany), or
MONTANA GOLD (imported from Spain). It's a bit more expensive than
US produced paints, but from what I gather a little bit goes a
long way; they grind the pigments much finer than US producers do,
and it covers more effectively.
Actually FINDING the stuff may be a bit of a problem; I've been
unable to locate it locally, and will probably wind up ordering it
off of the Internet.

Tom, W9LBB
