I must confess that I find seeing all these rave reviews of the
Harris RF-590 (which I have) very gratifying. I didn't really
appreciate what a fine receiver I had, until I did a side-by-side
comparison with a decent Ham radio receiver.
I recently eBuyed a HP3586 Selective Level Meter, as
recently mentioned here regarding beacons. It seems to
function just fine as a receiver and it's interesting to
have a beacon non-existent in the noise @ 3100 Hz bandwidth,
barely intelligible @ 400 hz, and leap right out at you
at 20 Hz. Best $200 I ever spent (for something that cost
US $17,000 twenty years ago)!
I'd love to hear how you use HP3586, especially if you're
taking the IF out to another receiver, or other such tricks.
I'd like to be able to use other detectors and a better audio
path, but I don't want to lose the 20 Hz filer...
