Geoff,
Thanks for the ideas, I have just received a schematic from CONDOR who
probably felt bad about the situation so far from home.
I suspect some electro problems as there was visual indication (smoke) from
one of the small caps on the downstream side of the supply.
Noted comments re diode noise, no intention of using controlled SCR's.
The repair was cheap enough last time, just the period it took me to find a
surviving WJ agent (no-one in Aussie interested) and then find CONDOR.

Still hoping for a comment from someone who has replaced the +5 +12 and -12
supplies with 3 terminal regs. Simple in theory and lots of room inside.
I was put off doing this by a comment that the main board sends back a
logical OK when supply voltages are within spec. No prior ideas how this
worked, what the interactions were between rx and psu were and if it was
even necessary ?
Maybe the schematic will show this............
