One problem with the neon bulb "clipper" with today's receivers is that if 
it fires at 60 volts, (across 50 ohms) you have 1.2 amps surge current into 
the front end, or a power level of 72 watts.  This is a momentary thing, of 
course, but certainly not wanted.

In the old days, receiver front ends were anywhere from 300 ohms up to
5 K or more.... where the neon clipper would have been adequate.
