The earlier 6790/GM used small bulbs that are hard to find.

I adapted mine to use small rectangular green LED's.

I had to file them down a little so they'd fit around the clear plastic when it
was installed, and I hooked them up in strings of five in series with a dropping
resistor.  (150 ohms?)  They were aimed up/down/left/right to provide even
illumination.  I glued them to the PC board.  

Not an elegant solution, but it worked well.
