Hello, All,
Some on the list might be interested in downloading a wmv video file of a
talk that Doug Smith gave at the Georgia Institute of Technology in May
2003 on 'Advanced Technology in Amateur Radio'. In this video he
discusses [to a general Amateur Radio audience, I believe] among other
things his receiver design philosphies and goes thru block diagrams of his
two best known receiver projects, the Kachina 505D and the TenTec Orion,
and discusses the design tradeoffs, limitations of dynamic range in analog
and especially digital stages, the role of roofing filters, the
appropriate use of [and potential problems with] analog AGC to try to
compensate for the limits of digital dynamic range, etc.
The file is about 77.5 MB zipped, and once expanded is about 79.6 MB. The
talk runs about 110 minutes.
As everyone on the list probably knows, Doug in addition to doing both the
Kachina 505D and the Orion projects is also the Editor of QEX. I think he
will be hosting the ARRL Technology Forum at the Dayton Hamvention this
year, on Sunday at about 10:15 am.
Doug's webpage that has the downloads for this file is at:
http://www.doug-smith.net/index.htm
The ZIP download itself is:
http://www.101science.com/QEX_MED.zip .
You can also watch it in streaming format:
http://www.101science.com/Doug_Smith_QEX_LOW.wmv
This is however low resolution, and the 'slides' [yes I know they are not
really slides anymore ;) ] are difficult enough to see on the medium
resolution version so I don't know how they would look on this version.
I downloaded and saved the 77.5 MB zipped medium resolution version of the
file in about 12 minutes. I really enjoyed the talk. Doug always does a
great job!
