I don't disagree, but the trend toward open standards has tended to 
encourage development of intellectual property around software instead.  
For example, Schneider Electric obtained patents that (in oversimplified 
form) gave them ownership of transferring data from a PLC to a PC using 
web technology, something most control engineers thought was public 
domain.  But after the portfolio was acquired by an IP licensing company 
the lawsuits were filed, at least initially, won.  (Details:

My point is not to argue that ethernet would be the logical interface 
for a next-generation receiver, only that there is a risk that 
commercial interests could potentially lock up and control key software 
technology that in a different way cold re-create the same type of 
problem we've had in the past with proprietary hardware.   As John said, 
insisiting on open source software is the best offense.    Interesting 
discussion!
