I think that you are 'right on the money' with this observation...
As someone who has been in the computer biz for 25+ years, I can confirm
that it has made managing the devices you mention much, much easier and
more painless.
I hadn't even though of the utility for other things (such as 'nice'
receivers). With the ubiquity of such features in a lot of computer
gear, it should be a relatively cheap add-on for many other devices.
