Vic,i also have a couple of wj8718 and wj8718a/mfp receivers and i am getting the manuals for the mfp version.They are 2 manuals , one is related to the wj8718 and a smaller one is related to the mfp option.I will give you the address to buy  copies (but in italy) when i am sure that they are the right ones.
I experienced some repair/alignement with wj manuals and i can say that with the manuals and a small equipment all defaults can be corrected (the manuals are exellent as the receivers ).
For your problem in my opinion, the faults are located by false contact in the edge connector of mother board.
You can try to clean the contact on the board and connector using a good contact cleaner ( i personally use the Philips 390CCS that is very effective also for potentiometers).
I do not use it directly on connectors and boards but i get a small amount of liquid on a "cotton fioc"(i means the 'tools' used to clean hears) .
You can clean also the connector on the mother board , but you have to sqeeze the 'cotton fioc' with pliers in such way that it can fit gently in the connector.
Make care to avoid that cotton can be loosed in the connector.
For test purpose in the wj8718a/mfp you can press 17* and all lights will go ON.
You can also press 18* and a complete diagnostic will be executed but in this case you have to read a fault code (i do not have at moment the equivalence from numbers to fault codes).
