Fellas, an interesting burst of activity recently. I think we shouldn't
ignore the Icoms and the Yaesu's of the world. I'm a SWL/DXer, not a ham,
and amongst my circle, we have been very excited of late with the Icom Pro
models, which functionally have performed every bit as well as the true
premium grade rx, and at a fraction of the price. I own many premium
receivers, and they're great, the latest being the Ten Tec RX 340 at over
$4k. Not cheap. To be honest, it's a lovely lovely radio to look at and
ergonomically, but I'm just not that happy with it's performance compared
to my Collins HF-2050 of 1980s vintage. Guy Atkins (I don't recall whether
Guy is a member here or not), does his homework meticulously and likes to
put his receivers through the paces. He souped up his Racal 6790 to be a
very hot performer, but was not impressed enough with it (His Icom R75
usually performed better, but again a souped up version with KIWA mods) to
keep it. He recently sold it for a record price on eBay. His receiver of
choice now? It's an Icom 756 Pro. I was so impressed by his impressions
and observations (as well as the ton of material on line about this
series), that I've gone out and purchased a Pro II model. Now there's the
Pro III. At less than half the price of the Ten Tec, and with the TFT LCD
screen, I'm very much looking forward to using it (fully computerized
controlled as well), and suspect that there may be a lightly used Ten Tec
for sale in the near future........Walt.
