Always? Not in my experience. 

If you insist on having a glowbuggish SSB converter, there are some 
available, and a shout on the R-390 list might net you a pointer. If
you'll be satisfied with sand-state, there's a nice one available that
runs off a wall-wart and a connection to the R-390 (or *A) IF output; 
I forget who makes it, but it's nice and runs just about $100.
