Hi All

I guess this is more a question for Racal enthusiasts in the UK but any
response would be much appreciated.
Racal supplied a batch of RA1792s to Portishead Radio, possibly over several
years, that had a USB filter fitted and five other symmetrical filters
between 0.1 and 2 KHz. No wider filters were fitted. The 100Hz filter was crystal,
all others were Collins mechanical. These were relatively early sets,
without backlighting or BITE, but seem to have only come onto the surplus market
over the last few years.
So far I've come into contact with four of these receivers, which leads me
to believe there's probably plenty more about.
Of those four, two had a hand written label adjacent to the antenna socket
stating that the "aerial mod" had been carried out and quoting a date in 1983.
Perhaps all these sets originally carried this label?
I had a chance to check over one of these quite thoroughly and could not
find anything to indicate a hardware mod, certainly the RF amplifier seemed as
normal and was not bypassed.
The original owner of this set was under the impression that it was less
sensitive than expected but initial measurements didn't seem to confirm this.
Unfortunately, it died completely before tests could progress very far,
tantalum failure being the prime suspect, and it's at present in storage and
unlikely to be repaired for some time.
If anyone has any information I would be most interested to know what this
was all about.
regards
Nigel Clarke
