[Premium-Rx] Mackay 3021A ?

I don't think this unit fits the category but I just got one and need some help please.

First,  what kind of battery does it use and what purpose does it serve?  The battery in my unit is composed of six blue buttons in series and has 6.78 volts on it with the radio on and after power off it drops to about 3.5 volts.  I assume it has something to do with saving the last tuned frequency and my cells are at EOL.  I'm also guessing the the six blue buttons aren't originals and I wonder what ITT used and where I can find replacements or a good substitute?  

After playing with it for a while I find I like the VLF coverage but don't like peaking the preselector. 

Where does the 3021A fit in the pecking order for sensitivity, selectivity, and recip. mixing?

I'd like to find a manual/schematic.
Any tips are appreciated
