[Premium-Rx] Headphones & Signal processing

I use a Timewave DSP-599ZX in tandem with my Racal 6790A (Timewave channel
A) and R-390A (channel B), and like it very much, but nothing you can do to
a receiver's audio signal with a dsp unit can "improve" it or provide
quality or bandwidth that isn't there to start with. One CAN improve it's
readability under difficult conditions, but that *invariably* makes the
audio sound worse (hi-fi wise), depending on how much you process it and in
what manner. I'm always relieved when conditions improve and I can punch the
"Bypass" button on the Timewave, which has DSP processed audio that is equal
to anything around, which is to say the more processing you do the worse it
sounds. :-) If flat freq response and studio audio is what you are looking
for, then hook up a good amp and a nice quality set of good speakers.
However if I used a setup like that, the first time I keyed up 1500 watts
four feet away from it there would likely be a lot of RF running around in
the amp and speakers and I'd have the feedback howl from hell back into the
mic. The 599ZX is "rf-hardened" and has full PTT built in so it doesn't even
blink when I key up a big transmitter next to it.

When forced to operate under terrible conditions where must use some sort of
processing, this 390A or 6790A/599ZX combo is the best I've tried, but then
I'm mostly interested in 100% readability, not wall-to-wall freq response.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. 599ZX's come up on Ebay occasionally
but are not cheap. That's because they work. :-)
