Thank you to all of you who replied. The ~only~ person who thought
low-fidelity communication headphones was a good idea, sold them...

Everyone seemed to agree to get the best 'phones I could
afford. I finally settled on Sony MDR-V700 headphones because:

1) they were among the recommended by premium-rx members
2) I happened to be passing a Sony store...
3) MDR-V700 was the best that the store happened to have in stock.

I found a dramatic improvement in legibility and sound quality, by
using headphones, instead of the built-in speaker of my Harris RF-590.
A dramatic improvement for a small cost; recommended!

Sincerely

p.s. I also visited Radioshack for some headphone mono-to-stereo
adaptor plugs.
