I run the audio from my 6790 into a Timewave DSP-599ZX. The PTT function on
the 599ZX in combination with a Dow-Key relay on the transmitter gives me
total audio AND RF silencing in the radio during transmit, with a bonus of
providing excellent outboard DSP for the 6790. I tried going just with the
T/R relay alone but no dice, the RF got into the radio (and therefore the
speakers) no matter what I did. The 599ZX solved the problem nicely, and
even provides a complete parallel "B" channel to run a second receiver
(R-390A), and of course also provides full audio DSP functions on the second
radio as well. An internal relay-controlled mute circuit wouldn't be too
hard to come up with, I suppose, but now that I've used this setup a while I
find I really like having variable audio filtering and DSP available,
especially for AM. I also run a Timewave DSP-59Y on my FT-1000D, and have
really grown to like Timewave's equipment.

I would be interested in hearing from members with the RACAL 6790 who have
built a mute circuit for the radio.
My thoughts before I proceed would be to short the antenna input with a
relay and disconnect the audio output and line output with same.
I would appreciate hearing from those who have made up a circuit to hear
what you have done.
Sincerely, Bill N2WL
