I use two AAA NiMH cells in a Rat Shack holder. The NiMH cells don't
release corrosive gasses like the NiCDs. I mount them near the input
roofing filter using one of the chassis screws and run wires back to the
microprocessor board. I've done this on several Racals and WJs and the
NiMH cells charge and work fine.
I doesn't look original but my processor board will never be damaged by
corrosion.

If anyone is contemplating substituting a separate battery holder for the
Racal or WJ receivers be sure to securely mount the battery holder! I had 2
Racal 6790's that were damaged during shipping because the separate battery
holders someone installed were not mounted properly and the holders + batteries
banged around inside the radio chassis during shipping, ripping the wires out of
the microprocessor board. Luckily no other damage was caused inside the radios
but I had to rebuild one of the circuit boards where the wires ripped out of
the traces. One of the battery holders was stuck on with double-sided tape. The
other was just tucked behind the ribbon cable coming from the microprocessor
board. Use a metal screw like Terry did and bolt down the holder somewhere
securely. Or just install one of the new identical-size NiMH memory batteries
made by VARTA in the original place on the microprocessor board and avoid future
trouble. 73 Todd Roberts WD4NGG.
