Thanks everyone for the advice and concern but I'm almost too
embarrassed to own up to this. I took my little old Magnavox portable
shortwave radio and went gunnin' for this interference. I was fully
prepared to scout out the neighborhood, walk for miles in 5 feet of
snow and subzero temperatures if that's what it took. Well, I walked
about as far as the next room in the house and heard a really strong
peak in intensity of the signal in question. I then walked back into my
shack and was able to find a directional peak in the signal and again
from the other end of the house. Trouble was, there were actually two
distinct sources of the interference. Well, to make a long story short,
I traced it to a Sharper Image "Sonic Breeze" air purifier! I have two
of them, one upstairs and one downstairs. I turned the nearest one off
and most of the noise went away but there was still some left at
slightly different frequencies. I turned off the other one and all the
interference is gone.

I can hear HF again! I still have some sort of signal coming from
downtown Saint Paul but I am so thrilled with the improvement that I'll
likely leave that noise for spring when I can hunt for it on my
bicycle.

I guess the message is, question everything. Any new "gadget" that has
electricity associated with it is a potential source of interference
and it's going to get worse before it gets better.

HNY all,

Gary
