Hi Dave,
For extensive info on both of these units, see
http://www.realhamradio.com/GPS_Frequency_Standard.htm by K8CU...really
great, concise info.
My personal opinion would be to hold out (I just picked up a Z3816 for $375)
for a Z3816 for several reasons...tracks 8 vs 6 sats, the phase noise and
frequency stability are both incredibly good (as you can see in the K8CU
material, and comm port and power are more run-of-the-mill, which translates
into plug-and-play in most shacks. All you need is a modest reg'd 24VDC
supply and a PC with a free comm port.
For either unit, you'll need a control pgm... "GPSCON" is a great starter.
Try to get hold of the initializer utility as well...that will scan the unit
and tell you what the unit's port is set for...once past that, you can
configure all sorts of stuff.
My experience has been that there is a noticeable increase in apparant
sensitivity on HF ... I am using Cubic R3030's ... other receivers may or
may not realize any change. It's also nice to work in absolute frequency
and have all your gear locked on the same frequency and phase.
The next step is to move to the latest version of GPSCON which has
facilities to put time synch on a LAN...almost disorienting to have the PC
clocks read the same. Of course then you need to become fluent in GPS time
vs UTC time and the care and feeding of leap seconds, etc etc. Actually
pretty interesting.
good luck
John Collins

Subject: [Premium-Rx] HP Z3801A/Z3816 Freq Std as a Receiver Std
I was thinking of using one of the HP GPS freq stds on my Harris RF-590A.
This receiver has provisions for a 10mhz external std input. My question
is: will my improvement in frequency accuracy be offset by a degradation in
receiver mds? Which would be better in this application, the Z3801A or the
Z3816? Anybody having any general recommendations or references for
precision frequency analysis methods with prem-rx? Thanks Dave
