I always replace electrolytics with high voltage units when ever possible.
This is a common failure in Racal units also.
I try to use caps rated for at least twice the working voltage. fc

Hi Harry ...

I repaired one of these for a pal a few years ago. Unfortunately I don't
have a manual. and the problem wasn't the one you describe.

However, the problem I had involved a dead electrolytic used between two
stages. My impression of the quality of components used throughout was that
I'd always look first for bad electrolytics in this radio. Gradually
deteriorating performance is also suspicious. I sure think the radio is
worth repairing, and if you have some confidence with the style of
construction you should be able to localize the problem. Suspect the small
electrolytics!

Tech. question for Mackay Marine 3030A Receiver.

Over the years this receiver has gradually deteriorated in performance. The
main problem has been with the failure of the AGC network, here causing the
receiver to overload, and having to ride the RF gain control in manual mode
at all times.
Isolating the RF. preselector; it generates 20 VDC. on its own at the AGC.
terminal input, while the actual receiver IF. strip terminal shows a zero
volt output, with no change in it's output with change of received signal
strength. MMnn.
Have any of our members experienced this problem ? or is this just one of
those random failures of no return.
Any comments on a solution would be most appreciated, it appears that this
set is quite similar to the 3040A and 3041A series of receivers; possibly
sharing the same architecture of design?
Never having the forethought of securing a schematic nor operations manual
for this high end marine 3030A receiver has turned this in to a most
daunting task.
Who would expect solid state equipment to fail. Does anyone have any
documentation out there ???
Thanks,
HARRY
