I'm not sure of the actual failure mechanism (it is a NICAD, and a crude current
charging system) ... but at some point in its life, the battery begins emit a
fine heavy vapour which is highly corrosive - and it eats your PCBs and
components in the vicinity. If your battery is showing corrosion I would suggest
that the process is just begining.
The battery is mounted (soldered) on the CPU board itself.
If it is pre-BITE, it is toward the front of the set at the top edge as you look
in the top.
On the BITE CPU boards, it is closer to the bottom edge.
However, there were various configurations of the board, so the actual position
(and make) of the battery can change. Some CPU boards were upgraded to take a
different battery (some have two leads others have 3 or 4), so they fitted a
small sub-board - this also helps to protect the CPU board from damage if the
battery leaks.
