You hit the nail on the head. I remember servicing the HRO-500 receivers
used by the UK government and the audio was gritty, cruchy, distorted, just
awful.

My vote for worst-sounding SSB and CW goes to the all-Germanium transistor
National HRO-500, produced until the early 70's. A neat-looking receiver
with the greatest dial mechanism ever, but it's ferrite pot-core 50 kHz IF
resonators caused terrible distoriion when using the product detector.  CW
notes sound like they're played on a harmonica. Interestingly, however, the
AM fidelity was excellent.
