[Premium-Rx] Coommon problem in SSB RX Quality

But if you really want to hear audio as it should be, and I have listened to
most of the receivers owned by premium members, there is only one, and that
is the Rohde & Schwarz EK-07. It's big, it's heavy, it's full of hot glowing
tubes, but let me tell you that receiver is unbelievable when you sit back
and let the sound wash over you.

Dear Members,
Nice discussion on receiver quality. I thought I'd throw in a bit of info.
I did some research a while back on diode ring detectors used for SSB. Any
of them that use point contact diodes (1N60's) will generally give pretty
good distortion readings above 1khz. However, below that, the distortion
goes up dramatically to 30% at 400hz. Replacing them with shottkey diodes
such as 4082-2900's or any others used in radar detection smooths out the
distortion nicely to below 1%. I think only the Heath SB104 and one or two
others used shottkey's in the detector. Of course a tube detector or IC
type should be better. I haven't done any testing other than on SSB.
