[Premium-Rx] The "Sound" Of Receiver IF Amplifiers

Hello again Bob.

I absolutely agree with you regarding the importance of 'ears' being the
measurement device. I was just interested to see if any correlation could be
seen between 'ears' and measurement instruments - I've always argued that you
can't beat the former.
A friend of mine was recently looking at Racal RA17 receivers (he is the sort of
person that can't accept anything the way it is), and the audio/IF performance.
He sent me some very interesting sweeps and analysis of the audio capability.
As a result he changed out the Racal filters, and fitted Marconi types instead.
The difference was phenominal.
I have recently aquired an RA17 receiver that was owned by Marconi Instruments
from new (in the 1950s) for demonstrating their state-of-the art test equipment
(then) - when I opened the radio up - guess what filters were fitted.

Best regards.... Richard
