Chris,
RA1792 was a very good radio in its day - not so sure now - old sets can be a
bit noisey and insensitive.
Suffers from several problems...
Early models can have LCD displays which can go leaky or 'fuzzy' - caused/made
worse by extremes of temperature cycling (storing in a garage or loft).
Badly manufactured CPU boards bristling with dry joints (a soldering process
manufacturing problem) - can be fixed with patience.
Similarly some of the CPU device PCB sockets are past their best now - a pain to
replace.
Beware of leaking memory back-up battery - if this has leaked onto the
surrounding board, it is impossible to completely stop the rot. Open the lid to
look by releasing 6 half-turn screws.
Audio quality from the inbuilt speaker is dismal - an external speaket is a
must.
CPU and interface chips (MK3850 and MK3853) have been obsolete since the early
80's - so replacements are hard (expensive) to find. Racal used graded (faster)
CPUs to make the 1792 work reliably - so not all replacements 3850s may work
satisfactorily.
If its cheap - buy it!
Richard
