I bought a Plessey 2282A from M&B two years ago for $2800, sent by Fedex
@ $220 plus US customs but it was damaged in transit. I sent it back to
Craig (another $220 FedEx) who repaired it and billed FedEx $700 for the
repairs. He sent it back to me (another $220) plus this time FedEx
demanded another $35 customs for the $700 repairs. I had some fun with
the twit who did this to me by arguing that they broke the radio and
they paid for the repairs with their $700, and they shouldn't have
allowed any US customs on the repairs anyway, so in any case they should
pay the $35 fee. Bureaucrats have no sense of humor. She stiffly
asserted that the repairs were made to my radio and were now part of it
so I must pay the custom fee whether it was correctly applied or not.
She offered no appeal, if I didn't agree to pay she would keep the
radio. So, this is how my $2800 radio came to be "worth" $3500. And
worth it, it is. I had a Racal 6780 and a Harris 590 and a Collins
851S-2 but I think the Plessey 2282A is the best radio of the lot. I
sold the Racal and Harris. I am keeping the Collins only because it
matches an HF-80 station I have built up from surplus HF-80 components.
I was going to keep the Harris because it matched a Harris RF-350-K
station but the Rx in the Harris 350 Trx is so good that I decided to
forego a tuning knob and sold the 590. I don't know if the 350 Rx is the
same circuit as the 590 but is is surely the best Rx I have ever
listened to 20M SSB on!
