Thanks to all who responded about the HP8640B vs R&S SMDU.
John Wilson, yes, if you have the chance it would be very informative 
and useful a test
done on the SMDU, if you can borrow one, thanks.
John Perlick, thanks for your offer, but the SMDU I bought  came with 
the two service
manuals (Part I and Part II, both parts in German and English).

For those who don't know the SMDU, I have uploaded a photo of the unit I 
bought on

As you can see, you need much more bench space than with the 8640B....

What I am looking for is the option to double the range from 512 to 1024 
MHz.
Nothing found on eBay so far.
