Greg and everyone,

BPL is a serious threat. However, I fear that it is not only the power line
issue that will cause us problems.
There is now a general drive to digitise everything, and this will eventually
find its way onto the HF bands too in the form of SW digital audio broadcasting.
I have been involved with high-power transmitter companies who are working on
this now. The very nature of digital broadcasting means that large sections of
the RF spectrum are completely stuffed full of RF energy, and analogue signals
won't get a look in. The ability to resolve various DX signals almost sharing
the same frequency will be gone (this doesn't happen in digital systems). This
certainly won't happen tomorrow, but over the next 10 to 20 years we may well
see our premium receivers relegated (slowly) toward the trash bin.
I am just waiting for Yaesu to release the first digital ham system - then I'll
know the end is near.
In the UK there are plans to switch-off analogue TV and audio broadcasting in
favour of digital systems - and we are more-or-less forced into it by reasons of
simplicity (for the user), cost and economy(?).
I have attached a link which explains a little more about the technical subject,
for which there isn't the space here.

Would be interesting to hear what others think about this.

Regards.... Richard
