Hi Greg and all
I have dealt with several instances of this in the past two days..
It affects Windows XP, Win2K, and NT.
All earlier versions of Windows are not vulnerable.
The infected PC will work ok but will shut down when internet access is
attempted due to multiple remote procedure call failures.
Microsoft have a patch to close the vulnerable ports, as per Greg's posting,
and this will cure the problem of the PC shutting down whenever internet
access is attempted.....
but that doesn't remove the virus itself.
The Symantec web site has a fix that will remove the W32.blaster virus.
The latter should be applied to remove existing infection and the Microsoft
patch should be installed anyway.
This virus is actually a "worm", that spreads itself via port vulnerability
across the internet and not via email, and anyone using the above mentioned
operating systems are at risk.
Quite clever.....
but a real pain in the butt!!!
regards
Nigel
