Hi Francis
This one's a bit smaller than that.....
the reed unit itself only about 1/8" diameter and not much more than 1/2" 
long.
It's mounted on a small pastic base, quite a nice PCB mounting unit, with the 
ends of the lead outs from the glass tube welded to the pins that go through 
the base and make the PCB connections.
Reed relays are still common, don't require much switching energy for 
starters, but are generally totally enclosed these days rather than being used in 
skeleton form like this.
Not surprising if they are as vulnerable as they seem:-)
