Hi Mike.
My views for what they are worth.
I own and use at least one of all the receivers you mention.
The word 'better' related to receivers depends what you want it for.
I listen to DX broadcasts and hams in relatively low transmitter RF fields, but
with a reasonable amount of electric fences in the vicinity.
In my opinion, and experience, the RA1792 is probably the worst of the the lot
for noise floor, sensitivity, spares availability, and reliability. Has some
strange 'software glitches' which affect usability. I have five - and they make
good door stops. Under some conditions, it could be considered a good radio -
its front-end is bullet-proof.
The Eddy has under-developed software (at least mine has) - but its 'OK' as a
receiver - and good to have it in a collection.
I like the RA3701 a lot - good facilities, easy to use right down to VLF - but,
its not as sensitive as you might think for a more 'modern' receiver - even with
the pre-amp switched in. The back-lighting for the displays is unreliable
(bulbs), and the power supply(s) can overheat and pop if not given plenty of
space.
I rate very highly the RA1772 - which you don't ask about - it has no memories
or micro-processor - and doesn't qualify as a premium reciever. But all mine (I
have 8) beat all the above for sensitivity, noise, and ease of use.
The NRD is a fine receiver at first impression - but I haven't used mine enough
to add fair comments about it.
I can recommend an RA6790GM too - similar performance to the 1772 (but with a
micro processor). In my experience the 6790 has a fragile front end - the 1772
is bullet-proof.
I don't do lab experiments or tests (and don't believe the manufacturers claims
for specs) - but compare real signals at the same time, using the same input
equipment, and output monitoring equipment (my ears).
Maybe not the scientific info you wanted, bit I hope this helps.
Richard
