Hi All,
I have 1/2 of a R3030 working on a couple bands. The preselector is quite
beat
missing a few filters. I decided to check it against the RA6830 performance
on 75 meters. Both synthesizers in the 3030 have 5 to 10 dB more phase noise
across the spectrum. I was surprised as the Racal is a single loop. The
Cubic
has about 5 dB better MDS having an RF amplifier. I like the Racal AM
demodulator
better but the Cubic has that nice meter feature for tuning in signals.
It looks like I will be forced to roll my own front ends to complete this
radio but there is plenty of room inside the modules. I enjoy comparing
the Cubic and Racal designs. It will be interesting to see what happens
when I make them better.
A while ago one of you guys sent me phase noise data on the RF590 which was
pretty close to the RA6830 maybe a couple dB better. I would be interested
in phase noise data from other receivers. I found the ARRL method of
measuring
phase noise is pretty accurate and easy to perform. You only need a
generator
and RMS meter.
I still love my Racal like a High School Sweet Heart. fc

I have decided to sell one of my Racal RA6830-516.
These are the radios that Frank Carcia is so crazy
about. The 6830 that is for sale has a full set of
filters, latest firmware, etc, etc with service
manual. If you are interested contact me off list.
