Hi Jan
You might want to investigate the djvu compression format to get file sizes 
down.
It's now used widely on the BAMA website for manual archives and achieves 
much better compression ratios than pdf.
It does require a specialised writer and reader but these are available free 
at..

It even manages significant compression of jpg files which surprised me when 
I first tried it.
There was bit of a learning curve involved with the writer, it gave the 
impression that the free version would only handle single page files which wasn't 
the case.
This was more down to the menu and instructions which may have been improved 
in later versions.

This really is something special.
I was amazed when I tried it......
and, no, I don't have shares in the company:-)
