Perhaps one possible extension of keeping serial numbers would be the ability to
log stolen/lost(?) property - aiding its identification to others sometime down
the line.
A similar system is used here in the UK in the world of vintage/classic
motorcycles. Enabling potential purchasers to verify vehicles offered to them
for sale (quite frequently, these vehicles are not always registered due to
changes in the official system some years back).
I know of at least one case where a valuable classic motorcyle was stolen,
dismantled, and then offered as parts elsewhere in Europe. It was spotted there
as stolen, and eventually returned to its rightful owner some years later.
I'd like to know that, if my kit was removed without permission, there may be
some guys out there checking before they buy it.
Just a thought.
Richard
