Perhaps the answer here lies not so much in the diameter of the pipe as to 
the depth that you bury it?
Given the considerable ground currents that result from a lightning strike 
it's presumably very important to avoid these, as well as any above surface 
effects.
In order to be completely sure I would suggest a below ground depth of at 
least thirty feet for the whole installation, including antennas.
Or am I missing something here?:-)
