Another technique that is sometimes works is to use a shielded loop antenna.
These can be made fairly compact and have a very well defined null that can be
pointed in the direction of a strong emitter. The electrostatic shielding helps
with impulses like lightning strikes. They hide nicely in attics.
If you really want to get fancy, a pair of loops in the vertical plane, oriented
at right angles to each other, can be used, and either connected to a goniometer
or phasing network to be electrically stearable. It's no Elephant cage, but not
bad for those of modest land holdings.
