George et al,
Here is a nice PDF copy of the info you need to get started programming the
8716/8 using RS-232 or HPIB. I found that the 488 interface is fast! The
tuning I get via the computer control is about as fast as I get by spinning
the wheel! Of course, there are many more benefits than simple tuning to be
had by controlling the rig by computer. Have fun...
You can thank Terry O for mailing me this supplement...
If I get around to it next week, I will clean up my interface control app
and post it as well.
Regards,
Adam

I do have the command set, courtesy of someone here on the list last
year (Terry O. maybe). I can pdf those pages for you. Regards,
Adam

Adam,
Sounds interesting. Unfortunately, I only have HP GPIB cards for my
PC's. The one I was thinking of using was the 27209 card which is an 8 bit
card which works with DOS. I have had experience writing software using
Turbo Pascal to control an HP8753ES Network Analyser, and I was thinking of
branching out a little!
I also have one NI type GPIB card (its a clone) but the one try I had
in getting it going met with dismal failure. As I have several HP cards and
they seem to work without any problems, I figure this is the way to go. I
also have some 16 bit card, but until I master Delphi (on the to-do list),
these will have to wait.
Do you happen to have the GPIB command set for the WJ8716?
George

Hi George,
I wrote a nice little *.exe for my 8716 you are welcome to play
with. Even better if you use Labiew, which is the language I used to
develop it. Nothing cosmic. It was a bit painful to construct the binary
words, but once the driver was built, I just call it when necessary. I'd
like to modify it to tune via the mousewheel though. You would have to
download National Instruments run-time library if you wanted to use it
though. but the price is right... Let me know.

Just a further note on Rx control. RS-232 is an UNbalanced form of
communication. Hence it is short range and tends to radiate. RS-422 is a
balanced form, and can be sent much further using just twisted pairs.
Because it is balanced transmission, it does not radiate nearly as much.
I have been considering writing some simple control software to
use with the GPIB port on the back of my WJ8716. Has anyone gone down this
road?

Per the data sheet at
http://www.rfcomm.harris.com/products/integrated-communications/rf-590a.pdf
, the 590A provides RS232, RS422 and MIL-188 interfaces. I had assumed all
are present but only 1 interface can be configured as active. Is that not
the case?
I'm glad my referral of ERGO (John Fallows) might have fruit. I
think he's the best answer for integrating a 590A controller into a stable,
high quality platform. He - as you can see from Don Nelson's email - is well
connected to the Premium Rx people and will make and test the product
correctly if there's enough interest.
By the way, 232 and 422 are not control languages. They do not
specify the meaning of bits or message content or message structure. They
only specify the physical layer (volts, current, timing, and some hardware
handshaking). We'll need Harris' definition of the data link and network
layers where the structure and content are defined. Hopefully that is
readily accessible, but this being a radio developed mostly for the military
I'm a little nervous that all the data isn't public.

I was told the 590 requires HARP and the 590A will work with
HARP or a different 232/422 command language, but I'm not very sure. It may
be configuration or synthesizer dependent.

You'll need to get a RS232<->422 converter.Somewhere I have
a copy of the R590A control codes. I'll bet they are nearly identical with
590. I've also got a 590A to try :-)I've worked with John Fallows in the
past to get the 8712P and RX340 into ERGO4.Don NelsonOregon

The proprietor of Ergo Software, an amateur radio operator,
has indicated he is willing to try incorporating support for these radios
into his software...if he can get the control protocols. I have both rx's,
and would want tooperate the WJ 8718 remotely via internet (located at a
prime rx site of course). The Ergo program looks interesting, and is priced
very reasonably. For a look: http://www.swldx.com/ If anyone can furnish
the control codes, ( both of my rx's use the 422 standard ) we could send it
to Ergo. Fred k2dx
