You are better off using two NimH AAAs in a holder at the back of the 
processor bay.  I've seen two 8718 boards badly damaged by the original 
batteries.

Best of all you can put the two AAAs in with no modifications to the 
radio.  Use a #20 solid wire to plug into the original battery connections 
and mount a standard Radio Shack holder by removing an original divider 
plate screw at the rear of the processor compartment and mounting it with a 
slightly longer 4-40 screw.  Totally reversible.

I've never seen an NimH cell corrode anything.  NiCDs, particularly the 
little black Varta cells are nasty.
