[Premium-Rx] 2050 Backlighting LCD's. Anyone done it??

As the header states, I'm looking for input on what has been tried as far as
a backlight for the LCD's in these radios? Any successful implementations?

I tried several things over the weekend including:

1. String of bright, tiny LED's shining down from the top. results in too
much glare from the inside of the front glass. Wrong angle for proper
illumination. LCD contrast needs to be adjusted. Also tried embedding the
LED's in one edge of 1/8" plexi (yes, tough job) and that didn't work any
better.
2. Conventional grain of wheat lamps in a poly milky white tube, better but
still hard to read.

It seems the only way to make the display readable in dim lighting is with
lighting directly in front of the radio.

Does anyone have a bad LCD that they could experiment with. My thinking is
that one may be able to peel off the back of the LCD, and allow direct
backlighting. There is enough space to do that.

Your thoughts?

cheers!
