Yes, I'm doing the same thing with my two units. Both of them have minor
problems so I purchased a couple hanger queens for parts. The first one
arrived yesterday and it is very clean. It has 2 problems the cavity and the
counter.
I have the manual and looked up the workings of the cavity and wonder if you
took it apart and cleaned it?

I know the power supply voltages are good and the problem was observed at
the SMC connector at the cavity output
for the counter drive. Interesting that both ends have problems. 
 
My plan is to repair my two test generators and install 1 cavity assembly
into my homebrew receiver to 
be the local oscillator source.

Glad to hear there is nothing magic
inside the cavity and suspect it is mechanical.			Thank You,

i  have the manual for the HP8640B (and have two of them for all kinds
of   rx-testing  (mainly  NF, IP2 + IP3, sensitivity, etc. etc.) and i
had a similiar problem with one of mine. this was a contact problem in
the mech. cavity-tuning, i solved with a lot of work ...
