Hi Everyone,

As discussed at our last club meeting, I visited Steve Goodwin (KN0RN) and his sister Becky at his assisted living facility in Colorado Springs today. We had a great conversation and visited about his desire to stay active on air and continue learning about amateur radio.

Steve, a disabled AF veteran and longtime PPRAA member, wants to operate ham radio from his hospital bed. He has purchased compact equipment for UHF/VHF and DMR communication. See attached pic.  However, he faces a challenge: the building’s structure and rules seem to prevent running externally penetrating coaxial cable for an antenna. A potential solution could be setting up a DMR internet connection, possibly using a low power transmitter to a hotspot to enable communication from his room.

I plan to go to his home with his sister Becky to see what other equipment we might be able to utilize that he already owns to make this concept a reality.  I invited him to participate in our weekly net and attend our monthly meeting via zoom.  He said he was a frequent attendee when our meeting was held at a previous smaller venue.

I’m reaching out to see if anyone with DMR project experience could assist me in getting Steve back on the air. If you’re willing to help, please let me know. Im open to other ideas as well.

Steve, an Extra class operator, has a G90 for HF,  however I’m not really seeing a way to make an HF antenna run without drilling or leaving the window cracked, and the facility has security restrictions for safety. His sister said he would be thrilled if he could make something simple work that would help him stay busy and allow him to communicate with the amateur community.

Sounds like a fun project to help out one of our own stay on air.

73,
