LIon batteries (not LiFePO4) have a long history of fires, including being blamed for some plane crashes. This is why the FAA has restrictions on lithium batteries, but even then there are still a lot of problems https://www.forbes.com/sites/suzannerowankelleher/2023/03/03/faa-lithium-battery-fire-smoke-airplane/?sh=695f900cbb04 . We can all recall the horror stories of people's phones catching fire.

Some of these are due to junk chargers instead of the manufacturer's OEM charger. Others are due to charging from nearly completely depleted. Others are due to "fast charging" or "rapid charging". The electric scooters often fall into the latter two categories. And sometimes people leave their device on top of things that are flammable.

When charging a device like a phone or HT (which are almost all LIon batteries), use the factory charger or quality or approved charger. Don't let your devices discharge completely if you can help it. Avoid using rapid or fast chargers or charging modes. When charging, make sure that the device/battery has plenty of air around it for cooling and do not place on or cover with flammable materials. If the battery is larger, like a scooter or eBike, charge it up outside (not in the garage) away from the building and away from anything flammable.

If you ever notice bulging LIon batteries, quit using them. Once in a while, go feel devices/batteries when they are charging and see how hot they are getting. They should get pretty warm, but if they are hot enough that you don't want to touch them, they are probably too hot.
