Derek-

I used to give as a final exam, the development of a circuit, using only  gates and the like, to completely redesign, the Whaelen arrow stick. Also, the same assignment was given for a more advanced course in computer interfacing to write the code for an Arduino using relays to perform the basic patterns as well as any pattern that the student decided to make. I have a demonstration unit if you want to see what can be done with an Arduino and a relay board. Just let me know.
