Derek / K0ATV here. Hope everyone is having a great 4th weekend! I stumbled into something that I feel is interesting. It all started with me doing the 13 Colonies Special event http://www.13colonies.us/ over the past two days. One of the nice things about this contest is that the operators utilize SSB, CW, FT8/FT4. So if you don't have a huge tower and a beam you still have a shot picking up all the stations fairly easy peasy. I myself picked up a few on FT8/4 that I couldn't grab on SSB, but it sure would be nice to know when they pop up right? Especially when you're down to the nitty gritty and just need that last one or two. Spotting pages with alerts can do it, and I have that set up, but there is another layer one can add and not be at the mercy of "spotters". It's that WSJT-X Monitor app I listed in the subject line. I downloaded it to my android phone yesterday and It's kind of neat, I have the WSJT-X call screen on my phone (it's connected from Radio to WSJT-X to Grid Tracker then forwarded through my Wi-FI to the phone). I can set alerts on the live data. Only caveat is that you have to have your radio on the band you want to monitor and computer up to do this, with the programs running. Is this for everybody, nope, but I'm having fun with it. I can see the WSJT-X feed on my phone or tablet while I'm sitting on the couch in another room, or even outside on the deck / porch!
