[PPRAANet] PPRAANet Digest, Vol 213, Issue 12

I was on 40 meters yesterday afternoon and came across a station on SSB that was so strong I knew he had to be within a few blocks of me. He was in Morrison, CO just on the south edge Denver. He was running power to a dipole. He gave me a signal report of 10 over 9, I was running 100 watts to a 40 meter delta loop about 15 feet high. Unusual for signals at that distance to be so strong. I would be interested in participating in the NVIS test.

To all who wish to participate in the NVIS testing, please send me an email with a detailed description of your antenna setup and how much power you will be using. Also, if your station location is different than on QRZ please provide that as well.

I will create a mailing list for the participants and send out emails for coordination. In your email to me, please let me know if you are OK with a Webex meeting to coordinate the live testing. Also, please let me know if you can hit the Marc repeaters, 447.475 in the Springs.

I will email a list of items to keep track of during live testing to all participants; please respond if you think I missed any relevant information to be recorded during testing.

After the live test I will compile the testing results and provide them to the test participants and anyone else interested.

Thanks, Phil

KF0FOE

OK, you got me going finally. I'll set up my 40M NVIS later today.

I'm good on QRZ for location.

Hi Dennis, I'm confident we'll perform testing multiple times. In any case, once I get my NVIS antenna deployed I intend to leave it up so I'll be willing and able to test when anyone wants to. The problem for those of us here in the Springs is, we're close enough that ground wave or direct wave is possible and consequently, makes it difficult to interpret out results. To really test our NVIS capabilities we need a station to test with, for which ground wave or direct wave is very unlikely.

I would also like to test ground and direct wave communications.

We still don't have a suggested date and time, to determine if we're available when everyone else is.

How about if we start with an initial test on 40m on Sunday, Jan. 16, at 1200 local time? Are you available to try a first test at that time?

All,

Thanks to all the peer pressure, I have put up my UGLY 40 Meter NVIS antenna. It's 2 legs are cut for 1/4 wave, it has a 1:1 BALUN and is mounted at 15 ft in the center and 2 ft at the leg ends. Pointed 30 deg and 210 deg. As soon as I first tried it there was a station in Grand Junction. Very unusual. By the time I was ready to use it, he was gone but I did make an FT-8 contact in Greenwood WI shortly after. Seems to work well. Still mostly East Coast stations showing up, but the "doughnut hole" appears to be a little active as well. This should be fun and informative.
See you on the 2 Meter net at 8:00 tonight if I don't forget.

73
Jim
