[PPRAANet] Local communications on 40m

You are probably already aware, but if you can go down to 80 meters, you can get into the Columbine Net every night at 7:30 PM on 3989 LSB, or the Colorado ARES HF net every Sunday morning at 8 AM on 3810 LSB. With NVIS coverage you should be able to get around 200-300 miles, often more, so that covers the entire state. Best test for NVIS is trying to get past the Palmer Divide to the north or stations in/past the immediate mountains to the west as most local HF will end up being groundwave. You might also try some 30 meter stuff as NVIS works up to about 10-12ish MHz, depending on conditions.

Just some options to play with when you are testing and experimenting.

John yes, the initial test I want to try is voice, but later it would be interesting to explore Winlink and other digital modes more robust to low SNR conditions.

You are all probably using voice, but my Winlink HF Gateway is on a low Inverted Vee which gives NVIS coverage for 80 and 40. It scans five frequencies on 80, 40, and 20 and two modes per frequency, ARDOP and VARA HF.

Depending on day and time, I’d be interested. My schedule is fairly flexible and if multiple days and times are possible, I’d like to test not only from my QTH but also from the Office of Emergency Management on Mark Dabling using the Special Communications Unit’s delta and quad loops on the rooftop.

I nominate Phil to pick a new date/time, and an HF frequency, and we'll see if we can get a few folks on the air to experiment. Phil, if you pick a time that the 147.345 repeater is not occupied, maybe we can coordinate on that repeater, so one person can transmit at a time, and listeners can report results?

If you have a low antenna that supports local communications (NVIS as it were) and would be willing to test out 40m SSB, I'd appreciate chatting about and trying to chat on the air.
