[PPRAANet] Lost Hiker uses ham radio article

Thanks for sharing, Kyle.

Every ham in the wilderness should at least be familiar with the
wilderness protocol (monitoring the NCF at the top of every 3rd hour -
or hourly - with the 3-hour intervals starting at 7am).  It's good also
to prearrange what freqs or repeaters you may be on in the event of an
emergency.

k6dfb and I use our ham HTs in the wilderness to keep in touch and for
emergencies.  And one time this past summer a ham repeater was helpful
for communication as we got a blown-out tire changed. :)

Since we're backpackers, I also have to keep stuff charged, including my
HT and a cell phone, which even without service is still a great
waterproof camera, notepad, library, Bible, white noise generator, and
backup GPS navigation tool (my primary nav in the backcountry is just an
altimeter and a printed topo map).  And the HT also makes a great
weather radio and FM broadcast receiver.  To keep things charged on
longer trips, I carry a lightweight 5W Renogy solar panel (was $10 on
Amazon; that model is no longer available though) and a power bank.
It's not exactly the most ultralight approach, but hey, I'm a geek.... :)

Here in Colorado, it's nice that the CERN folks monitor the Colorado
Connection repeaters for mayday calls.  Colcon has pretty good coverage,
and skyhub link is also useful.  We have both programmed in our radios.
