I was thinking that it would be nice to be able to directly record
signals off the air with SignaLink and bypassing my transceiver's
speakers and my PC or laptop microphone. It's probably common knowledge
how to do this, but a search on the intenet turned up nothing.
So here's how I did it:
1. Download Audacity (a free, open-source application) from
https://www.audacityteam.org/
Warning -- on the top of the download page, there's a big blue arrow.
That is not what you click to download Audacity -- that's an
advertisement, and you may end up with something on your PC you don't want.
Scroll down and you will see different install packages in the left
column. Download the latest install package for your device.
2. Install Audacity on your PC or laptop.
3. Run Audacity (making sure your SignaLink is connected to your PC or
laptop and running, so that Audacity can see it).
4. On the toolbar, select edit --> Preferences --> Devices
Under Host:, select Windows DirectSound
Under Playback, select Speakers (or what ever device you use to hear the
audio from your PC).
Under Recording Device, select Line (USBAUDIO CODEC)
Under Channels, select 1 (Mono)
These selections may also be made from the pulldown menus.
5. To record, tune in a signal, and press the record button (the red
colored orb on the right of the menu).
To stop, press the button with a black square, or press your device's
space bar.
Use the slider control next to the microphone icon on Audacity, and the
RX knob on your SignaLink to adjust the recording sound level.
6. Use the button with the green arrow to playback the file.
7. Unless you want to save the file as an Audicity project, click File
--> Export and choose the file type you want to save it as -- .mp3 is a
good choice, since Windows knows what that is. I wouldn't select .wav
because of its large file size.
Disclaimer -- these instructions worked on my Windows 10 laptop -- they
will probably be different if your running Windows XP, Linux, or a Mac.
Linux and Macs have different install packages.
