Hi fellow club members,
As you may be aware the club's board is considering establishing a remote station at it's site near Ellicott. Probably the biggest hurdle will be to access the internet at that location. We have investigated several internet access solutions. At this time the most promising is via a cellphone type wifi hotspot.
Before the club begins spending money to establish the remote station it would be best to test the internet service via cellphone wifi at the site. To facilitate the test we need someone with a smartphone with an activated built-in wifi hotspot or a wifi hotspot device. If you are willing to allow us to use your phone/device we would need to go out to the site for testing. We would prefer T-Mobile but another service would be acceptable for test purposes. Myself and several others are planning to meet at the site at 1PM on Thursday, 10/16 for work and testing. If that time is inconvenient for testing we could arrange another time to do the test.
There are three things we would like to test. First is can we receive a reliable signal at that location. (T-Mobile says we can.) Second is can a suitably equipped computer work with the hotspot. Third is what is the data usage. We think the actual test should last something less than a half hour. It will consist of accessing a few websites to determine the above three factors.
We promise not to have a major impact on your monthly data allocation. We plan to use an Apple iPad Air for the test computer.
If you can help please let me know by email.
Thank you and 73,
Jim H., W0EM
